What makes you happy?
SMILES is for anyone who has ever given up on a dream, for anyone who is pursuing their dreams, for women, moms, dads, people of color, queer people, artists… anyone whose life didn’t turn out the way they thought it would. There is something for everyone in SMILES, for people of all ages. SMILES is about living a life you never wanted and then finding something to love amidst all of it.
There are shows and movies about motherhood. There are the ones that make you cry, like THIS IS US and PARENTHOOD. There are the ones that make you laugh, like MOM and BAD MOMS. Now we need a show that makes you laugh and cry. A show that delves into parents’ minds, focusing on what they gave up to become parents, but also what they love about their lives. How they often feel like they are faking it — they are undercover agents in a world they have been thrust into against their will but need to pretend-smile their way through it.
The greatest theme of SMILES is what makes us truly happy? What makes us smile a genuine smile? Being a human is hard, and life never goes the way we plan. So how do we as humans find joy where we are, and how do we gain sympathy for those around us? Sometimes we have to go undercover — become a different person whilst simultaneously being ourselves — in order to find the life we are meant to live.
And of course, SMILES is hilarious.
We center around a woman who has disintegrated into a fragment of the person she used to be. But suddenly, she has a purpose. She is using her talents. She doesn’t need a husband. She can make something of her life on her own. Who’s smiling now?
